Leadership On the Go: Goals

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? Luke 14:28

The above verse are the words of Jesus talking about the cost of following Him. Jesus was telling those who would hear that the cost of discipleship is very high, even to the point of leaving everything behind.

Have you counted the cost of leadership and goal setting? A leader without goals is like a spectator without something to gaze upon. Here’s another cheesy statement: Know Goals Know Progress, No Goals No Progress..

So if you are leading a business, church or band, you need to have short-term and long-term goals. Goals give you a measuring stick and a guide for decision making.

Making Time

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

I am no different from many of you who make new years resolutions, only to look back and see broken promises made to self. However, there is a way for you and me to make good on our best laid plans for a new year.

Put it in writing.

That’s it, there is something about writing something down that makes it more attainable. So instead of having dreams and and goals that just stay inside your head, get them out! Tell your family members your goals; tell friends, coworkers and the hipster at the coffee shop.

One of my written goals, for this year, is to read through the Bible chronologically. This is an important goal for me, because I have yet to read the Bible chronologically, and I want to make time in order to reconnect on a spiritual level instead of an intellectual or academic level. Pray with me as I continue to press on..

What is one of your goals that you wish to accomplish this year?

Two Weeks

How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah Psalm 84:1-4

Hey there! This is a short update on where I have been, where I am now and where I am going. The above passage teaches us that no matter where we are, our longing should be for the courts, dwelling place of the Lord. If you were to ask my wife about me, she would tell you, that when I am not thinking up crazy plans I am doing this thing called Army. Since November 14, 2011, I have been on orders to Camp Atterbury, Indiana. I have been there training soldiers who are on their way overseas. I have enjoyed this mission and often find myself torn between missing my family and helping soldiers learn the tasks that may save their lives. Continue reading →

Saying No

So, the first blog of the year comes eighteen days after the fact….

There are all sorts of leadership blogs, breakout sessions and books devoted to the art of saying, no. Most leaders will advise people to say, no every once in a while, in order to be more effective. However, in this short blog/thought, I would like to pose a different perspective on the matter. Imagine if you were a leader trying to accomplish a given task, and all you hear is, no… Now, imagine that you were the staff or someone directly involved with the task and all you heard from the leader was, no… Continue reading →
