This morning we will be looking at two passages that will either define us or expose who we really are.
I have said in the past that this is what we will focus on and I believe that it is what God has called all believers to do.
Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Continue reading →
This is a simple outline of my latest sermon at Covington Baptist Church. As a church we read through the prophecy and fulfillment along with some points to think about.
• Prophecy One
- Prophecy: Genesis 3:15
- Fulfillment: Galatians 4:4
• Prophecy Two
- Prophecy: Isaiah 7:14
- Fulfillment: Matthew 1:18–23
• Prophecy Three
- Prophecy: Micah 5:2
- Fulfillment: Luke 2:1–7
Three things to think about:
1. From the garden, God is actively involved in the reversing of sin’s grip on humanity.
2. God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
3. God is involved in the small details of our lives.
As we walk in a world that can, at times, be dark and cold we have a great light that gives us hope and we are to share that hope this Christmas season.
Closing: Isaiah 9:2, 6-7
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned…
…For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called – Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
Jonah 2
1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. 2 He said: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead(sheol) I called for help, and you listened to my cry. 3 You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. 4 I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’ 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit. 7 “When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. 8 “Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. 9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the LORD.’” 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. Continue reading →
