Called to be… ME

Hey everyone! I have answered my own questions for all to see. This was a questionnaire that I have sent out to many friends and leaders for the betterment of others. Feel free to ask questions or leave a comment.

Ministry Position or Expertise: My Current position is Family Support Specialist with the state of Kentucky. Before this position I served churches in the areas of Youth Ministry, Associate Pastor.
Where are you located: Louisville, Kentucky
How long have you been in/doing current ministry? Part Time 8 years = Full Time = 2 years – Total 10 years

Coaching:

(In your opinion)
1. What are some things you wish you knew before entering into your specific ministry/expertise?
For me, I wish I had known how to handle people who didn’t like me. This may sound odd, but there are people who have a problem liking anyone “new”. I think the most helpful aspect to this question is that those starting out in ministry, or any job, would be to learn how to deal with conflict, people management and stress relief.

2. What are some specific ways to build knowledge/experience in your area of ministry/expertise?
Serve under a pastor, youth pastor or minister. Find out what God is calling you to be and then surround yourself with like-minded leaders who will invest in you. Next, I would say read everything you can about your area of interest. Lastly, seek the Holy Spirit and His leading.

3. What are some common challenges associated with your area of ministry/expertise?
Getting everyone “on-board”. Its easy to write out a budget on a ChickfilA napkin but it is another thing to convince people to follow your lead. Best advice would be to give people ownership and allow them to get on the boat or jump ship.

4. What was your biggest learning experience concerning your ministry/expertise?
Not every Youth Ministry/Church is the same. This sounds like a no-brainer, but it’s true! Do not expect to go in to a new ministry and expect the same results from the same practices.

5. What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing ministry/expertise?
Pray. Learn. GO. Prayer is the first place to realize one’s calling and vision. Learning is key when pursuing a leadership role. Finally, GO, meaning go for it! Jump in and do it, don’t wait for the right moment to start living out the calling God has placed on your life.

6. What tools/websites do you use in your ministry/expertise?
Several! SimplyYouthMinistry.com, creativemyk.com, theresurgence.com, churchcreatives.com, esvstudybible.org, macarthur commentaries, 9marks.org and many many more!

7. What are some key failures that you would pass along to someone interested in ministry/expertise?
When faced with opposition you must deal with it as soon as it comes. Do not be apathetic when opposed. Understand the opposition’s concerns, pray to see if you need to change, take action.

8. What traits must one possess in order to excel in your area ministry/expertise?
Humility, Integrity and Passion.

9. What is the vision for your ministry/expertise?
Love God Love People: Great Commandment, Great Commission living.

10. Do you see any current trends in your area of ministry? Will the trend(s) have a positive/negative impact on future ministry/expertise?
Family ministy is not a new trend, but it is a growing movement within the church today. From the Pastor down to the grounds crew, my advice would be to learn all you can about the families you serve and focus on a family discipleship model.

11. Are you on social media? If so, which ones?

Called to Be… A ministry wife

Hey everyone, This is the first post under the title, Called to be a Ministry Wife. My goal for posts like this is to help future and current ministry wives build a network of nurture and support.

This post is from a friend, Danielle Smith, who is both in ministry and a ministry wife.

How long have you been a ministry wife? 6 years

Do you or have you served in any role in your husband’s church?
1st church I was the children’s minister; last church I was a CORE group leader, sang on praise team and taught 3yr old Sunday School; current church- I lead worship for Jr. High Worship on Sunday nights and Sr. High Worship on Wednesday nights

(In your opinion)

1. What are some things you wish you knew before entering your husband’s ministry?
Our case is a little different because I had been serving as a children’s minister at a church for two years when my husband came on staff at the same church as the youth pastor.  I did learn that with both of us being on staff and at the time having no children that church can become your life if you allow it.  We were usually at church every day of the week, and at every event possible we could be for students (ballgames, concerts, award ceremonies, etc.).  We found out you can quickly be burned out on ministry if you allow it to consume your life.  Although the things we were doing were good things, I think we may not always honored God with our time.

2. What are some specific ways to build knowledge/experience as a minister’s wife?
For me the best way has been building relationships with wives of husbands who have been in youth ministry for a while.  I have learned a great deal from two friends who have been by their husbands’ side in ministry for many years.

3. What are some common challenges associated with being a minister’s wife?
For me, knowing when to say “no”.  I have always been really involved with Brian in ministry since the very beginning, but now with two children there are some things I have had to step back from.  I’m always there at church times and of course go to camp and retreats, but there have been some events that I just am not able to attend now with two small children.  This has been hard for me, but I’ve realized its okay to say “no” and that my primary ministry is to my girls.

4. What was your biggest learning experience as a ministry wife?
I guess for me it has been recognizing my role as the youth minister’s wife is more about being a godly example rather than just trying to get kids like me.  Once you show interest in their lives and show that you are consistent in your walk, it doesn’t matter how “cool” kids think you are.  Teenagers just want to know that you genuinely love and care about them.

5. What advice would you give to a young married/engaged couple starting out in ministry? Guard your time with each other.  Family must always come first!  Ministry can easily take the place of family time if you allow it.  I love that Brian really takes his day off seriously and does all he can to make sure that day is spent with me and the girls.  Of course, there are unavoidable things that come up from time to time such as funerals and hospital visits, but overall help your husband to guard his time off!

6. What tools/websites do you follow/read?
Lifeway girls ministry has a great blog that always has great and practical ideas and I also follow them on twitter (@lifewaygirls); Also, cpyu.org always has great insight regarding pop culture and how to minister to this generation of teens

7. What are some key failures that you would pass along to the next wife?
Try not to take things too personally that may be said about your husband.  Always be willing to go to bat for him and support him at all times, but know that there will always be those who have negative things to say.  I think sometimes its been harder on me than my husband because I’ve viewed it more as a personal attack than a spiritual battle.  One trait that you unfortunately have to develop in ministry is a tough skin and a willingness to rise above the negativity.  Satan would love nothing more than to allow drama to distract you from doing what God has called you to do.

8. What traits must one possess in order to excel as a ministry wife?
I think probably the most important trait is a genuine love for students.  They are very perceptive and can tell if you don’t want to be involved in the ministry.   I think that youth ministry is definitely a calling not only for my husband, but for me as well.

9. What is the best thing a wife could do to support their husband’s ministry?
Let your husband know that you support and respect him.  Be present and involved as much as possible.  It’s important for the kids to know you too, especially the girls.

10. Do you see any current trends for couples in ministry?
Are they Positive/Negative? I don’t know if this should really be called a “trend” but there has definitely been a shift in the focus of youth ministry from being big event driven, to family focused.  This means that the primary role of the youth pastor now is equipping parents to disciple their own children rather than viewing it as the role of the youth pastor.  Although this is not a new command, it is difficult trying to train parents to do this when their parents likely did not disciple them.  One of the greatest ways I think couples in ministry can help other families is by striving to set a godly example in their own home.  This also means allowing students who may not have godly examples at home to see how you and your spouse try to live out your faith daily.

Ministry Helps – Called to be an Associate Pastor

Hey everyone, I have another GREAT post from a long-time friend in the ministry, Jeff Prosser. Jeff was the first person who “showed me the ropes” of ministry. I remember speaking to students, for the first time, under Jeff and I am greatly appreciative. If you are near the Richmond, Ky. area and are looking for a wealth of information on ministry, I would definitely recommend him. Jeff has been successful at both youth and associate ministry roles.

Name: Jeff Prosser
nickname: JP

Ministry Position or Expertise:
Associate Pastor

Where are you located:
Richmond, KY

How long have you been in/doing current ministry/expertise:

youth ministry 18 years, Associate Pastor 3 years

(In your opinion)

1. What are some things you wish you knew before entering into your specific ministry/expertise?
To know how fluid of a position this was going to be.  It’s always changing and I typically enjoy the “fluidness”, but sometimes miss the constants.

2. What are some specific ways to build knowledge/experience in your area of ministry/expertise?
READ!  A saying a mentor told me once…”If you’re going to lead, you gotta read.”

Talking and asking questions to others who are in similar positions. I have found that in my position as an associate pastor the roles and expectations depend on the church you serve.

3. What are some common challenges associated with your area of ministry/expertise?
If you operate with a “to do” list usually because of the make up of this position that will get tossed out the door most days.  Again, the most fluid position I’ve ever served.

4. What was your biggest learning experience concerning your ministry/expertise?
It’s all about the relationship.  Programs and agendas are to help those relationships.

5. What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing ministry/expertise?
It must be a calling of God.  Ask lots of questions.  Put Godly mature people around you.

6. What tools/websites do you use in your ministry/expertise?
Facebook has been a huge resource.  I’m an avid blog reader and blogger, I’ve found lots of good resources through that world.

7. What are some key failures that you would pass along to someone interested in ministry/expertise?
Don’t think you can build a ministry around yourself.  There should be no Lone Rangers.

8. What traits must one possess in order to excel in your area ministry/expertise?
Gotta love PEOPLE and have a heart for them.  That’s why you do what you do in ministry.

9. What is the vision for your ministry/expertise?
To try and infiltrate our community with the love of Jesus.  The days of opening the doors of the church and inviting folks to come in are over.  We must go to where the people are.

To see people become true disciples of Jesus Christ.

10. Do you see any current trends in your area of ministry? Will the trend(s) have a positive/negative impact on future ministry/expertise?
I work a lot with our college ministry…I hear lots of students talk about how the church is irrelevant to them today.   If that kind of thinking does not change by the church becoming more relevant to the culture, that could have a tremendous negative impact on what I do as a pastor.

11. Are you on social media? If so, which ones?

Insights from a Pastor

Hey everyone, it is my privilege to present a pastor of 40 years and a cousin of mine, Ron Lasley. Pastor Ron is someone that I look up to in ministry. This is the third post in a series called “ministry helps”, although under a new title I have named Insights from a pastor. Check out Pastor Ron’s wisdom:

Name: Pastor Ron Lasley
Nickname: Faster pastor

Ministry Position or Expertise: presently minister of outreach/evangelism

Where are you located? Pleasant Grove Baptist Church/ Maranatha community fellowship

How long have you been in/doing current ministry/expertise: Just started but been in the ministry for 40 years

(In your opinion)

1. What are some things you wish you knew before entering into your specific ministry/expertise? Being better equipped to deal with people who seemed to be against anything new. Wish I had been mentored for the position better by someone who would take the time.

2. What are some specific ways to build knowledge/experience in your area of ministry/expertise?
Read and listen, not be in to big a hurry to get started it is better to wait on starting then to mess things up and hinder what you are trying to accomplish.

3. What are some common challenges associated with your area of ministry/expertise?
Finding people who get it, understanding that the Kingdom of God is bigger then the church you are in. Finding people that will support you and work with you in an area that is not traditional.

4. What was your biggest learning experience concerning your ministry/expertise?
Learning to be what God called you to be and not what others, the seminary or the church says you should be. (cookie cutter preachers)

5. What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing ministry/expertise?
Find a successful mentor, study, learn, listen, wait till you have clear direction from God, spend an enormous time with God and Bible study, not what Calvin or the Armenian and ask God to give you a burden for souls.

6. What tools/websites do you use in your ministry/expertise?
THE TRUTH PROJECT, EXPERIENCING GOD, CHURCH PLANTING etc.

7. What are some key failures that you would pass along to someone interested in ministry?
Unless you have clear direction in an area, do what you know to do, we have all been called into ministry, we all have a calling, you do not necessarily  have to go to Africa to do ministry unless you are clearly being called to go there.

8. What traits must one possess in order to excel in your area ministry/expertise?
Be a people person who learns to listen and patiently teach, Paul told us in II Tim to reprove, rebuke and exhort with great patience.

9. What is the vision for your ministry/expertise?
Planting a new effective church and growing believers to be involved in ministry, DUDE Doctrinally sound, unity stressed, Duty expected and Excitement for Jesus.

10. Do you see any current trends in your area of ministry? Will the trend(s) have a positive/negative impact on future ministry/expertise?
Yes, the church has been influenced by the lies of Satan and has gotten comfortable in just going to heaven. We have for years attempted to scare the hell out of them but have not taught them how to fall in love with Jesus.
