Acts 1:8 – The promised Holy Spirit will bring power and direction.
Acts 2 – Pentecost / Peter preaches the Gospel. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to share the Gospel
Now we come to the end of chapter 2 / The Holy Spirit enables true community.
42They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.44All the believers were together and had everything in common.45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
– Can you see it? This is a church that is being moved by The Holy Spirit making an impact for the Kingdom of God. This was & is a MISSIONAL CHURCH.
A MISSIONAL CHURCH is a church that shares the Gospel, makes disciples and plants churches. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit in Acts 1:8 but laid the blueprint for the church in Matthew chapter 28:18-20:
18Then Jesus came to them and said,“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inthe name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Jesus said, as you go, make disciples, teaching them.
The early church in Acts 2:42, devoted themselves to:
1. The apostles teaching
3. Breaking of bread
Verse 44 says that they had everything in common. This early church wasn’t a bunch of robots rather they were a community of people who were unified by the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit empowered the early church to be unified. 1 Corinthians 1:10 says,
10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.
How can there be such a community?
When believers allow the Holy Spirit to guide them there will be a natural pouring out of the fruit of the Spirit. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT:
Galatians 5:22-26 – 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
The early church in Acts 2:42-47 was not only empowered by The Holy Spirit but they were enabled by the Holy Spirit to be unified in mind and thought. This resulted in a MISSIONAL CHURCH:
Verse 46, says that they did these things daily. The Holy Spirit was enabling a community of believers to make disciples, who not only Loved God but Loved People.
It was at the forefront of their minds this was an early church. It was more important for them to be sharing the Gospel daily, meeting together daily, praying for one another daily, remembering Jesus’ sacrifice daily …
This early church was unified, impacting the community and the Kingdom of God was growing.
