I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 1 Timothy 1:12-15
At first glance, this passage is looking at Paul’s life, his powerful conversion from sinner to commissioned servant of Christ. This is a picture that is painted of the gospel itself! This gospel that we share with those around us is the awesome message that we have received.
The grace of God through Jesus allows us to be saved from our ignorance and disobedience. The mercy of God withheld the punishment that we deserve and placed it on Jesus, His perfect Son sent to save those who are lost.
At times, I look into the mirror to adjust my receding hairline to no avail; this passage is like the mirrors that plague my good looks. Like Paul, I am a sinner saved by the grace of God, faith in Christ alone.
