Pray.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Life is full of ups and downs.

For some, life can be overwhelming. If you turn on any news channel life can be a bit scary. So scary that folks are afraid to go out in public. Check your social media feed and you’re bound to find bad news or someone else’s drama laid bare for all the world to see. As we get older doctors visits or phone calls can be daunting.

Life is hard.

Because life is difficult, humanity has tried to fix our anxiety, our fear, our discomfort. There are thousands of books on how to better yourself in order to live your best life now…

So what can we do when life gets hard? What 3 step program can we do to fix our life?

Hank prays often. Be like Hank.

I know what you’re thinking, “Thanks for the advice, but I need help.”

Ok, I’ll help you.

Don’t think of prayer as simply talking to an imaginary thing in the sky. Think of prayer as trust.

Are you sitting down? Good, because the seat that you’re sitting in is going to teach you about prayer. I am willing to bet that you didn’t inspect every bolt, screw, and nut that is holding that chair together before you sat down. In fact, sitting down on a familiar chair becomes second nature.

1. We trust that the chair is going to hold us up.

Prayer is like sitting in a familiar chair. We begin to trust that God is going to hold us up in times of despair. We trust that God isn’t going to let us fall.

2. We trust that the chair is going to give us rest.

Prayer is like resting in a familiar chair. All the worry, anxiety, and pressures of life can be debilitating and cause us to want to run and hide. We trust that when we pray God will meet our needs and give us rest. We trust that in God we can find peace.

3. We trust the chair by putting our faith in its ability to not let us fall.

Pray is believing that God hears our prayers. We trust that God is who He says He is and that He will do everything He has promised.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, but by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds with in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
